Applying for your provisional licence

Before you can learn to drive a car, moped or motorcycle you must apply for a provisional driving licence You may not drive on public roads until you are 17 and have received provisional licence. You can apply for a provisional licence up two months before your 17th birthday if you:

  • Are a resident of Great Britain
  • Can meet the minimum age requirement
  • Can meet the minimum eyesight requirement
  • Are currently not prevented from driving for any reason
  • Can pay £50.00 by Mastercard, Visa, Maestro, Electron, Delta or Solo debit or credit card
  • Have a valid UK passport or another form of identity
  • Can provide addresses of where you have lived over the last three years

There are two methods of doing this:

Apply online

You can get your first provisional driving licence for a car, moped or motorcycle online. Apply using your Government Gateway ID. If you don’t have one or need to re-register, you’ll get an ID as part of your application.



Apply by post

You can apply for your first provisional driving licence for a car using form D1. This is available from any post office or by telephoning DVLA on 0870 240 0009
